Privacy Policy
Short version: KaraCooks is a personal food blog. I’m not in the business of collecting or selling your data. But the internet being what it is, some data does get collected when you visit, and I want to be straight with y’all about what and why.
Who runs this site
KaraCooks is owned and operated by Kara Hudson, based in Johns Creek, Georgia. If you need to reach me, the contact form is on the About page.
What gets collected
When you read the blog
KaraCooks uses standard web analytics to understand things like how many people visit, what posts they read, and roughly where in the world they’re coming from. This data is aggregated and anonymous; I can’t see “Jane in Akron read your enchilada post for four minutes.” I can see “twelve people from Ohio visited yesterday.”
The site uses StatCounter for basic visitor stats. StatCounter sets cookies and may collect IP addresses, browser type, referring page, and similar technical information. Their privacy policy is here.
The site is hosted on Hostinger and runs on WordPress software. Hostinger may also collect technical data about visits as part of normal hosting operations.
When you comment
If you leave a comment, the comment form collects your name, email address, and (optionally) website URL. Your email isn’t displayed publicly; it’s used to manage comments and reply to you if needed. Your name and any website URL you provide are shown with your comment.
Comments may be checked through Akismet, an automated spam filtering service. Akismet’s privacy policy is here.
When you click an affiliate or referral link
When you click an affiliate or referral link (marked with an asterisk on KaraCooks), the destination site may set cookies that track whether you make a purchase. This is how the affiliate program knows to credit me for the sale. The destination site has its own privacy policy that governs what they do with that data.
I don’t receive any personal information about you from these clicks. I see aggregate stats like “X people clicked through” and “Y purchases were made,” not who you are or what you bought.
What doesn’t get collected
KaraCooks does not:
- Sell your data to anyone, ever
- Share your email address with third parties
- Use behavioral tracking to follow you around the internet
- Run third-party advertising networks that build profiles on you
- Collect more information than is actually needed to run the blog
Cookies
The site uses cookies, which are small text files that store information about your visit. Some are essential (they make the site work); others are for analytics (helping me see what’s popular).
Most browsers let you control or block cookies in their settings. If you block them, parts of the site may not work as smoothly, but the content will still be readable.
Your rights
If you’re in the EU, UK, or California (or anywhere with similar privacy laws), you have specific rights regarding your personal data, including the right to:
- Know what data has been collected about you
- Request a copy of that data
- Ask for it to be corrected or deleted
- Opt out of certain types of data processing
I’ll respond within a reasonable timeframe. Legally I have 30 days; in practice it’s usually a lot faster, but I’m one person.
Children’s privacy
KaraCooks is a general-audience blog and is not directed at children under 13. I don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you’re a parent and you think your child has submitted information to the site, contact me and I’ll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new “last updated” date at the bottom. Significant changes (like adding a new tracking tool or changing how data is used) will be noted on the blog.
